Frequently Asked Questions

Shoulder Replacement

Shoulder Replacement Surgery FAQ

  • What is shoulder replacement surgery?
Shoulder replacement (shoulder arthroplasty) involves replacing the damaged parts of the shoulder joint with artificial components (prosthesis). This procedure relieves pain and restores movement in the shoulder joint when damaged by severe arthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy, or a complex fracture.
  • Who needs shoulder replacement surgery?
Shoulder replacement is recommended for patients with severe shoulder pain and limited range of motion due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy, avascular necrosis of the humeral head, or a severely fractured shoulder joint that cannot be repaired.
  • What is the recovery time for shoulder replacement?
Early recovery takes 4–6 weeks during which the arm is kept in a sling. Formal physical therapy begins around 6 weeks. Most patients regain significant function by 3–4 months. Full recovery and return to activities typically occurs within 6–12 months after surgery.
  • What activities can I do after shoulder replacement?
After full recovery, patients can perform most everyday activities including light sports like golf and swimming. Heavy lifting above shoulder height and contact sports should be avoided to protect the implant. Your surgeon will guide you with specific activity recommendations.
  • Are there different types of shoulder replacement?
Yes. Types include total shoulder replacement (replacing both ball and socket), reverse total shoulder replacement (for rotator cuff tear arthropathy), and partial shoulder replacement (hemiarthroplasty). Dr. Dilip Mehta will recommend the most appropriate type based on your specific diagnosis.
